  • Serves as a strong advocate for quality health care for women

  • Maintains the highest standards of clinical practice

  • Provides continuing education of its members

  • Promotes patient education

  • Increases awareness among its members and the public of the changing issues facing women's health care.

How does my doctor become board certified, and why is it so important?

Becoming board certified is a long and difficult process that requires much dedication and takes several years to complete.  It is extremely important because it means your physician is absolutely committed to ensuring that she is qualified to offer you the highest level of patient care. Here is how it is accomplished.

After completing a four-year course of study and graduating from Medical School, a physician must then complete a four-year residency training program in Obstetrics and Gynecology.  She must then pass a rigorous written exam board exam at the completion of her residency training.

The next step involves compiling and submitting a detailed list of the patients cared for during her second year of medical practice after residency.  This “case list” is carefully scrutinized by the nations top OB/GYN’ s in order to ensure that the physician not only has adequate experience to become board certified, but has also demonstrated that she is providing top quality medical care.  Once your doctor’s case list has passed this initial screening, she is accepted as a candidate to take a 3-hour oral board exam with intense questioning by 6 experts.  If your physician passes the oral board exam, she is finally “board certified” by The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
